Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3D (IN CINEMAS 9 FEB 2012) [Movie Review]

Star Wars fans, have you ever doubt the tittle when you see it? Isn't Star Wars Episode 1, The phantom of Menace was on 1999, why the fudge I am doing it's review now? Well, you are partially correct. Star Wars Episode 1 was an old movie, but it was in 2D. During the production of Episode II and Episode III between year 2002 and 2005, director George Lucas first began exploring the idea of presenting the entire Star Wars Saga as 3D theatrical releases. However, the active 3D conversion work on Star Wars Episode 1 only began in 2010. Compare to some fancy computer generated graphic science fiction movies (like the earlier days Sharks 3D and very viral Avatar), the 3D version of Star Wars may not appear as good as what you expect. Instead of popping out the screen like how we usually visualizer the 3D film to be, Star War Episode 1 footage is sinking in, creating a sense of depth to the image. In fact, only 8% blown up. I wouldn't say it's disappointing but I do expect more from Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox International.

Do you notice too or it is my shallow knowledge that, in this 3D version, the colors are more saturated?

In conjuction with the release of 3D version, 5 more Star Wars Episode 1: Phantom of Menace 3D were published

Some of the poster looks quite bad ass, especially the last 3 posters which is those typical science fiction movie poster you would see in our time. This shows, how dedicated the team are, not just simple recycle everything.

Courtesy to Nuffnang for inviting me for the premier screening of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3D. For those of you who born on post-Star Wars fever just like me, here is a bit of my version of synopsis, so as to poison  you and lure you to the Star Wars fever too XD

The Trade Federation organize a blockade around planet Naboo according to Lord Darth Sidious order for an offer. The Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic send 2 Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi(Ewan McGregor) to negotiate with the Trade Federation to resolve the issue.Like what Qui-Gon expected, the negotiation was indeed short because they were trapped and killed by the federation causes the negotiation never started. However Qui-Gon and Obi-wan were smart enough to run away and hide in a landing craft to Naboo. They then meet Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) which were banished from his own country. Frighten by  Qiu-Gon on the war, Jar Jar Binks bring them to the underwater City - Gungun. Qiu-Gon tried to persuade the ruler to help their co-existence city Theed. Although Qiu-Gon's persuasion has failed, they still get a transport through the center of the core. When Queen Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) was rescued by the Jedi and escape Naboo on a space ship, the ship was attacked by the blockade. When the plane almost crash, the midget astromech droid R2-D2 repair the shield and saved everyone including the Queen. However, the ship was badly damaged forcing them to land in a nearby desert planet, Tatooine which was not under the republic's control, to buy the spare part. In the planet Qiu-Gon meet Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), whom he believe to be a "Chosen One" which will retain the balance of the UniversForce as stated in the prophecy. By giving a little help to the Skywalker in the pod racing, and bet the ransom of the kid with his ship, Qiu-Gon free Anakin from his enslavement while Qui-Gon get all his spare parts. Beeing a Jedi was all Anakin dream for, so he follow Qiu-Gon back to  Republic Capital Planet of Coruscant, but his request to train Anakin as a Jadi was rejected because Master Yoda sense that Anakin's future was covered by his fear. At the other side, Queen was trick by the Sanator Palpatine so that she will vote a "untrust" vote to the current Chacellor because the senate can't help her, so she decided to return to Naboo with the Jedi. The Queen convinced Gunguns to form a alliance against the Trade Federation. The Gungus hold a fake war out from the city while the Queen leads the people into the city. Her army take over the space port and go on to a hard war with the droids control station other space while she leads a minority to the center of the castle to make a new agreement with the Trade Federation. At the same time, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon encounter Darth Maul for a lighsaber fight and Anakin by accident pilot a vacant spaceship and destroy the droid control station in the outer space. Darth Maul killed Qui-Gon but Obi-Wan success in revenge. At last, Yoda (Jedi Council) accepts Anakin to become Obi-Wan's apprentice as what Qiu-Gon wished for before he passed away.

So, this is my not so short summary. How was it? Pretty addictive huh? Actually, I hide some important plot in the story, a plot that is what keep the story going for 6 episode. So, what ya waiting for? The movie will release on 9th, its a good chance for you to view the movie if you have not do so. Once again, Star Wars will be the most discussed movie in the decade!

From left to right:
Obi-Wan Kenobi(Ewan McGregor), Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) and Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson)

The very easy to die Darth Maul (Ray Park)

The pretty Queen Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman)

Btw, my media kit just happen to have some of the production's picture.
Out of my expectation, the Pod racing vehicles are all real model, not generated by computer graphic. I can totally understand how hard it is to get these props. The animation in front of green screen is consider the best technique of that time, and it was 2 decades ago!

Even the aliens are made from real human models, not Computer graphics. Cool huh?

Overall: 12/10 [The most well known science fiction of all time, what can I say more? Out of the blue, and their points too]
3D/CG: 12/10 [The limitations of the technology in last 2 decades did not limit the production, the producer do all the best for the most quality at that time]
Story: 11/10 [Very additive story line, after the movie, I went to Google and Wiki the plot of the whole 6 episode, LOL. If it's legal, I would stream all the 5 other episode NOW!]
Cast: 10/10 [Frankly, I don't know any of the actors in the movie except Natalie Portman. But the director, photography director, action director make all of them work out pretty well]

Disclamer: I do not own or posses any right to any photo posted in this blog post. All these photo belong to Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox International which I obtain from the media kit.
