My Penang Diary 2: Paddington House of Pancakes, Queensbay Mall (review)

Was Down to Penang for shopping last weekend. The only mall that comes into my mind was Queensbay Mall.

When I am doing my shopping, I was also looking for a nice place to have early dinner. I don't like dinner jam  =(
When I first saw the word Paddington in 1 of the Penang blogger's blog I read beforehand, the cute Paddington bear hop into my mind <3

I don't think this restaurant have any connection with the sweet heart above, but Paddington House of Pancake (PHOP) is really a sweet heart too ^ ^

I have no idea how can I missed this awesome place when I was back in K.L. Well, maybe I spend too little time in K.L every year *>.<* Walking in Queensbay reminds me that Panang has a PHOP outlet too.

Paddington House of Pancake's Menu
I was a bit surprise when I read to it's menu. Not only they serve sweet pancakes, they serve savoury pancakes too. I never had savoury pancakes in my life. All this while, I though pancakes are sweet desert and this really give my mind a blow!

When I concentrating reading the menu, flip it from front to back and back to front can't decide what I want, one of the waiter come beside me and ask me whether I need some help. I really appreciate the friendly service here. He suggestion was helpful, but there is something I think he/they can do better. The waiter is friendly, helpful but do not know it's product well. I wouldn't say he is not knowledgeable but rather need improvement on pancakes's knowledge(material, method pf preparation, flavour etc) or maybe work on his' explanation skills too. Another comment that I would pitch is that the waiter give suggestion according his own experience. It's ok to give decent praise on certain dishes in the menu, but it's not very nice to degrade certain dishes with your own point of view unless the customer ask your opinion on it.

Like most major restaurant, mere dining area in the shop is not enough...

PHOP also has table outside the shop, in the middle of the mall. With a magical touch of interior design, the walk way transform into a heart warming place to hang out.

Paddington house of pancake-Fizzy berry
Fizzy Berry, RM7.50 per glass
I have a love hate relationship towards this drink *>.<*
I like the sweet soda and sour berry taste. I like the berry chip, but not the big chunk that has seeds in it.
Not only it block my straw, it is also very sour when chewed =(

Grill Salmon with mash potato and Zucchini Onion Pancake, RM19.50

Paddington house of pancake - Grill Salmon with mash potatoes and zucchini & onion pancake
Front to back: Onion sauce, zucchini pancake, grill salmon, mash potato with mashed pea and sour cream as topping

Pancake: I thought zucchini is raw veggies that goes well with sandwich. I rarely see dishes prepared with cooked zucchini, not to mention pancakes. (ok, the savoury pancake is already a great shock ). One side of the pancake was bake to crust while the other side remain soft and cloudy. The zucchini was not overcook. The veggies remain it's moist with tender juicy filling.
Onion sauce: Consuming the plain zucchini pancake is already a bless, but when both the pancake and onion sauce WOW! Exquisite! The oily saute do not moist the crunchy grill like layer of the pancake, but give an extra smoothing texture to the pancake. Need not to explain, the slightly salty sauce is the origin of the savoury taste for the pancake.
Salmon: One of the best, or probably the best salmon I ever taste in my life! The fillet was not marinated, but it is reasonably fresh (of course you can't compare the freshness with a freshly slaughted Salmon sashimi~). It was also not over cook or still raw (I had some bad experience of raw and non fresh grill Salmon before -___-), very juicy, slightly oily with a crusty outer layer+skin, *muack* just the way I like my Salmon to be ^ ^
Mash Potato: No surprise in the mash potatoes. I think more milk can be add to enhance it texture and flavour. No comment on the mashed  pea and sour cream topping, just decent I would say.

Overall: 9.5/10 (A very new concept of  specialty restaurant that focus on pancake. Rare, fun, excited, good experience)
Taste bud indulgence: 10/10 (PHOP really amazed me, I like the surprises and unexpected taste bud experience, would like to come back to try more ^ ^)
Purse saver: 8/10 (I know specialty restaurant will rank at higher price, but out of Asia, pancakes are just some normal daily meal, part of their life! Don't you think we deserve to charge lesser? Although geography constrain the receipt to be norm in Malaysia, but pancakes flour is very cheap in Malaysia! *>.<* )
Atmosphere: 9/10 (Warm with a classy touch, good place to hang out. The dim ligh in the shop is more romantic than the tables located outside)
